       The banquet room of
The Aitkin Supper Club had seen its share of varied gatherings: wedding
receptions, barmitzvas, family reunions and athletic award ceremonies.
So, when the group who called themselves "Friends of Heaven's Gate"
wanted to rent it for a Tuesday night - the whole night - no one thought
twice about it. That is, until the janitor came in at five in the morning
to find twelve men, stiff as boards, lying in the floor in a giant circle
with red Nikes pointed skyward. In the center of the circle was a bowl
of red Kool-Aid and a handwritten note: "Gone on a comet ride, Yee-ha."
