742-08/1 Jungfraujoch – Switzerland [October 12:40]
I was traveling with my office and had to stay during the weekend at Bern.
I had already been with my wife to the valley of Grindewald, but we could
not get to the Jungfraujoch, since there was bad weather. This time, the
good fortune was with me, it was a sunny day and I took the train from Bern
to Grindelwald at 6AM and by 9AM I was walking towards the glacier. In order
to take this photograph I took a train that goes through the mountain and
gets you to the mountaintop of the Jungfraujoch, 3550 meters (11650 feet),
where there is a weather station. In this complex carved in the rock, there
is an Ice Palace, a tunnel made in the middle of the glacier. While the
tourists took photographs of the ice sculptures, I walked with the tripod
that danced over the ice taking photographs of the walls. There was little
light and it was very difficult to calculate exposing time. The tunnel has
a hand rail that it is attached to the ice wall with square wooden blocks,
as the glacier moves, the hand rail goes up, so it has to be removed and
lowered, leaving a square hole that is later filled with water. The original
image is of this ice block, which after the solarization give this image,
which I think of a Pelican. |
