SKIN 2003 poster

ICEBOX presents: The human body in art. Figures, eros, fragments, politics, mirrors, estrangement, mind, and metamorphosis in a two part exhibit of more than one hundred works of art from around the world. Exhibit juried by Howard M. Christopherson. The SKIN 2003 part 1 exhibit

A call for entries was distributed locally and posted on the internet, and a surprising array of images were sent to be juried. Slide entries arrived from 23 states and 7 countries. Howard Christopherson, artist and owner of Icebox, selected 112 pieces from more than 500 works of art submitted. Because of the quantity and quality of art selected an additional show was added, making SKIN 2003 a two part back to back exhibit. The media in this exhibit includes photographs, paintings, drawings, digital prints, sculpture, video and mixed media pieces.

Artist & Model by H.M.Christopherson"I wanted to find new artwork that approached the human body in different ways. I titled the show ‘SKIN 2003’ and asked for entries. Happily, many submissions arrived. I had to select from a large amount of artwork to create a diverse exhibit that would fit within the Icebox Gallery. After I was immersed in the selection process, I realized that I had enough worthy art to mount a second show. Selecting art for this theme was a fascinating and enlightening experience for me. I hope the viewing public understands and enjoys the art, and walks away with a shared experience that is very human."
- Christopherson

Some of the earliest works of art ever discovered were tiny sculptures of pregnant women. If the subject matter of the nude human body is this old, why does it continue to fascinate artists in the new millennium? What makes contemporary images of the body any different than images made hundreds or thousands of years ago? Where, if ever, does art about the body end? Today, in 2003, we are bombarded on a daily basis with images of the body in the media, fashion, and other aspects of pop culture. Think of the products on store shelves that are decorated and made more appealing and marketable with a pleasing (and sometimes altered) image of the body. We continue to work, exercise, feed, dress, clean and care for the body like our distant ancestors. People still crave, desire, covet, exploit, reveal and hide the body, but young artists continue to produce new work that is not always exactly the same. Gender changes, morals, politics, war, technology, surgery, sex, and disease are just some of the underlying thoughts that can affect artists creating contemporary artwork on this theme.
